Plywood vs MDF vs HDHMR: Which Board Should You Choose?

A plain guide from our workshop in Udgir, so you can compare quotations properly.

Short answer: use BWP or marine plywood anywhere that gets wet, such as under the kitchen sink. Use MR plywood or HDHMR for wardrobes and most kitchen cabinets. Use MDF for shutters that will be painted, PU-finished or given a membrane finish. Avoid particle board for anything that must last or carry weight.

The board inside your furniture is the one thing you cannot see once it is built, and it is where two quotations for the “same” wardrobe usually differ. This guide explains what each board is, where it belongs, and what to ask for in writing.

Where Each Board Belongs in a Home

Kitchen sink cabinet

BWP or marine plywood. This is the one cabinet that will see water leaks, so it is not the place to save money.

Other kitchen cabinets

MR plywood or HDHMR. Both hold hinges well and cope with kitchen humidity.

Wardrobes

MR plywood or HDHMR for the body. MDF is fine for shutters if you want a painted or PU finish.

Beds and TV units

MR plywood for anything carrying weight, such as a storage bed base or a wall-hung TV unit.

Shutters with a special finish

MDF or HDHMR. Their smooth surface takes paint, PU and membrane finishes better than plywood.

Bathroom vanity

BWP or marine plywood only.

What to Ask For in Your Quotation

The board, by name and grade

“Plywood” is not enough. Ask for MR or BWP grade, and the board thickness, written in.

The brand

Ask which brand of board will be used, so you can check it on delivery.

Edge banding

Every cut edge should be sealed with edge banding. Open edges let moisture in, whatever the board.

Hardware

Hinges and drawer channels wear out long before a good board does. Ask for the hardware brand as well.

Common Questions

Is MDF bad for furniture?

No, but it is the wrong choice in the wrong place. MDF gives the smoothest surface for painted and PU finishes, which is why it is used for shutters. It swells if water gets in, so it should not be used for a sink base or bathroom vanity.

Is HDHMR better than plywood?

They are close. HDHMR is denser and very flat, which suits shutters and kitchen cabinets. Plywood is lighter and holds screws very well along its length, which suits beds and heavy-duty units. Both are far better than particle board.

What is the difference between MR and BWP plywood?

Both are covered by IS 303. MR (moisture resistant) is interior grade and handles humidity. BWP (boiling water proof) uses a waterproof glue and is made for wet areas. Marine plywood (IS 710) is a higher grade again.

Does Latur’s weather matter for the choice?

The monsoon months bring high humidity to the whole Marathwada region, which is hard on MDF and particle board. For most rooms, MR plywood or HDHMR with sealed edges is enough. Water from leaks is a bigger risk than the weather, which is why the sink base needs BWP.

Which board does Shine Modular Furniture use?

It depends on the piece and your budget, and it is always written into the quotation. Our showroom in Udgir has the boards side by side so you can compare them. Call 8329239728 before you visit.

Choosing Furniture Board in Udgir and Latur

When two modular kitchen or wardrobe quotations in Udgir or Latur look very different in price, the board is usually the reason. One quote may use particle board with a laminate face, the other MR plywood with edge banding. From the outside, on the day they are fitted, the two look the same.

The difference shows up after a few monsoons: particle board shutters sag and the screws pull out, while plywood and HDHMR stay true. That is why a good quotation names the board, its grade and its brand, as well as the hardware.
